Whooping Cough (Pertussis): Protection for Babies and Pregnant Women
Whooping cough, or pertussis, is a severe respiratory illness that poses a significant risk, particularly to infants, and can be fatal. In Flanders, babies are immunised against whooping cough at an early age. The initial vaccination is administered at 8 weeks old, with full protection achieved a few weeks after the third dose, given at 16 weeks.
Vaccination During Pregnancy
Pregnant women are strongly advised to receive the whooping cough vaccine during each pregnancy, ideally between weeks 24 and 32. This ensures that sufficient protective antibodies are transferred to the baby before birth, providing crucial early protection until the baby receives their own vaccinations. If a mother missed the vaccination during pregnancy, it is offered immediately after delivery to safeguard the newborn.
Free Vaccination for Adults
In Flanders, adults, including grandparents frequently in contact with babies, can receive free whooping cough vaccinations. To avail of this service, individuals can visit their GP, who orders the vaccines at no charge through Vaccinnet, the electronic vaccine ordering and registration system of "Zorg en Gezondheid".
It's important to note that a prescription from the GP is unnecessary, and if the vaccine is purchased with a prescription, the Flemish government cannot reimburse the costs. However, reimbursement may be possible through health insurance.
Summary
Protection for Babies: First vaccination at 8 weeks, full protection after the third dose at 16 weeks.
Vaccination for Pregnant Women: Between weeks 24 and 32 to pass antibodies to the baby.
Free Vaccination for Adults: Available through the GP without a prescription.
